Overview

Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital (YNHPH) is the primary site for Yale New Haven Hospital’s adult and adolescent psychiatric services. YNHPH is an inpatient facility specializing in the rapid assessment and treatment of acute and severe psychiatric symptoms, and offers a full spectrum of innovative and advanced treatments.

In addition to inpatient services focusing on general adult, dual diagnosis, adolescent and geriatric psychiatric services, we offer electroconvulsive therapy and intensive outpatient programs. Children under age 13 requiring psychiatric care are usually referred to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. Our goal is to provide outstanding and expert care to individuals and enable them to return to their communities as soon and as safely as possible.

Patient Care

YNHPH and associated psychiatric services at YNHH offer patients an extraordinary range of clinical services, including programs specializing in the major mental diseases. Our clinical programs are part of the training and research missions of the hospital and medical school. 

Research

Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital is affiliated with Yale School of Medicine's (YSM’s) Department of Psychiatry, and our physicians and staff are dedicated to blending quality clinical care and advanced research. All of our medical staff physicians are affiliated faculty of YSM and frequently participate in and lead research efforts in areas such as hallucinations, Alzheimer's disease, mood disorders associated with pregnancy and after birth, mood disorders and mental illness in primary care and other medical and surgical treatment settings.

Education and Training

YNHPH also trains physician residents with YSM's Department of Psychiatry.YNHPH, associated psychiatric services at YNHH, and our patients directly benefit from Yale School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry education programs. The department and its faculty offer undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, as well as training opportunities in psychology and advanced research.

Parking

Short-term patient and visitor parking

Air Rights Garage60 York St.floors 4, 6 and 8. Covered pedestrian connections to the hospital can be found on floor 2 and 4 of the garage.

Long-term patient and visitor parking

YNHH offers long-term patient/visitor parking at discounted rates. Patients expected to be hospitalized for more than one week should discuss parking options with their social worker.

Emergency Department parking

  • Patient-only Emergency Departments parking is available in lot #1, at the corner of Howard and Davenport avenues.
  • Patient self-parking rates: Free for up to 3 hours in lot #1. After 3 hours, vehicle owners will be charged the short-term parking rate ($1 per hour for 4 to 7 hours; up to $20 for 7 to 24 hours). Please see the parking attendant at the ED entrance for a ticket for the three free hours of parking in lot #1.

How it works

  • You will be greeted by the valet attendant who will ask for your keys and cell phone number.
  • You will be issued a virtual parking ticket on your cell phone.
  • Your car will be parked in a secure lot.
  • When you are ready to leave you will have the ability to request your vehicle and pay for parking on your mobile phone.
  • You will be directed to select which valet location you would prefer to retrieve your vehicle.
  • You may have your vehicle returned to any of the listed valet locations; it does not need to be the one at which you arrived.
  • If elect to not pay by phone you will have the ability to pay for your parking with the valet attendant (cash or credit).

  • Shuttle from the Union Railroad Station has scheduled weekday stops at York Street & Cedar Street between 7:17 & 9:23 p.m.
  • Shuttle from the Union Railroad Station has scheduled weekday stops at College Street & South Frontage Road between 6:33 & 10:12 a.m. and again between 3:09 & 9:25 p.m.

When patients are faced with short- or long-term inpatient hospital care, families and caregivers can stay comfortably nearby. The Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut

The Ronald McDonald House is a place where families can stay while their child is being treated at the hospital. A referral from a hospital staff member is required before a family can register as a guest at the House. A modest fee is charged per night.

YNHH offers transportation from the hospital to the Ronald McDonald House. Please call Protective Services at (203) 688-2500 in advance of the time you would like to leave.
